Unit Content

Term 1

Qui es-tu?

Students learn French phonics and apply these in learning how to sing a song, how to greet people and introduce themselves, and how to understand and give information about likes and dislikes, ages and birthdays.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures related to the greetings and introductions, likes and dislikes, and ages and birthdays
  • Understanding the terms ‘cognate’ and ‘near cognate’

Key skills developed:

  • How to recognise and understand French phonemes
  • How to use phonics to recognise sounds in French when reading and listening
  • How to use phonics to support writing and speaking
  • How to use a basic sentence builder to develop understanding of vocabulary and structures
  • How to use interactive tools to support language learning
  • How to apply developing vocabulary knowledge to a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities

Assessment: Students are assessed formally in Term 2. The assessment ranges across all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and includes producing a paragraph of written French and engaging in a short conversation. Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice in all four language skills.

Term 2

Qui es-tu?

Students learn to understand and give information related to physical description, where people are from, and where they live.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures from Term 1 in addition to new language related to descriptions, where people live, and where they are from
  • Knowing about the places where French is spoken around the world

Key skills developed:

  • How to recognise, understand and produce French phonemes with greater independence
  • How to use prior knowledge and previous sentence builders to build on and develop knowledge and understanding of vocabulary and structures
  • How to use interactive tools to support language learning
  • How to apply developing vocabulary knowledge to a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities

Assessment: Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice in all four language skills.

Term 3

Comment es-tu?

Students learn to understand and give information related to descriptions of family members, including relationships they have with them.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures from Terms 1 and 2 in addition to new language related to describing others and relationships
  • Knowing how to express and justify an opinion

Key skills developed:

  • How to recognise, understand and produce French phonemes with greater independence
  • How to use prior knowledge and previous sentence builders to build on and develop knowledge and understanding of vocabulary and structures
  • How to apply developing vocabulary knowledge to a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities

Assessment: Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice in all four language skills.

Term 4

Comment es-tu?

Students learn how understand and give information related to pets and descriptions of paintings. They also learn to compare people.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures from Terms 1 to 3 in addition to new language related to descriptions of pets and paintings, and making comparisons
  • Understanding how opinions are expressed and justified in French
  • Knowing about the work of French-speaking artists

Key skills developed:

  • How to recognise, understand and produce French phonemes with greater independence and authenticity
  • How to use prior knowledge and previous sentence builders to build on and develop knowledge and understanding of vocabulary and structures
  • How to apply developing vocabulary knowledge to a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities

Assessment: Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice in all four language skills.

Term 5

À l’école
 

Students learn how understand and give information related to their classroom, the contents of their school bag, and their school subjects. They build their understanding of how opinions are expressed and have the opportunity to watch a film in French related to the topic of school.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures from Terms 1 to 4 in addition to new language related to school equipment
  • Understanding the cultural context of a school day in French-speaking countries
  • Understanding how opinions are expressed and justified in French

Key skills developed:

  • How to recognise, understand and produce French phonemes with greater independence and authenticity
  • How to use prior knowledge and previous sentence builders to build on and develop knowledge and understanding of vocabulary and structures
  • How to apply developing vocabulary knowledge to a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities

Assessment: Students are assessed formally in Term 6. The assessment ranges across all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and includes producing two paragraphs of written French and engaging in a longer conversation. Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice in all four language skills.

Term 6

À l’école

 

Students learn to understand and give information and opinion related to the school day, while building their cultural understanding of school life in France and other French-speaking countries.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures from Terms 1 to 5 in addition to new language related to the school day and schooling in France

Key skills developed:

  • How to recognise, understand and produce French phonemes with greater independence and authenticity
  • How to use prior knowledge and previous sentence builders to build on and develop knowledge and understanding of vocabulary and structures
  • How to apply developing vocabulary knowledge to a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities
