This week, we marked Holocaust Memorial Day in assembly with Years 9, 10 and 11.
Mrs Carlyle and Miss Robinson explored the stories of perpetrators and victims of the Holocaust, such as Hana Senesh. In 1943, when the Nazis’ plan to murder all Jewish people in Europe became known, Hana, who was from Palestine, joined the British army. She was one of 240 Jewish people from Palestine who parachuted into Europe to fight the Nazis and to help Jewish people hide. She was caught and tortured by the Gestapo and then executed. Today, she is remembered for her poetry and for her actions during the Holocaust. Her most famous poem, A Walk to Caesarea ("Eli, Eli"), is frequently recited in commemorations of the Holocaust.
We finished by reflecting on how at Icknield Community College we demonstrate our value of ‘Care’ by having the moral courage to stand up to those who exclude others.
