Unit 1

Badminton instruction in this unit develops students' serve, overhead play, underarm technique and net play. In rugby, students learn to apply advanced skills and to identify rule breaches with confidence. Sudents learn to select and apply a range of relevant skills within game situations in hockey, developing their ability to play tactically in matches.

Key skills developed in badminton:

  • How to explain the rules of badminton and umpire games
  • How to perform a range of serves with some accuracy
  • How to select relevant shots depending on players' positions
  • How to perform core skills within a game situation with good control
  • How to uphold sporting values when playing
  • How to perform core skills in drills demonstrating some accuracy

Key skills developed in rugby:

  • How to organise a ruck quickly and effectively
  • How to defend the opposition's jackal with some success
  • How to hold up an opponent to form a maul effectively
  • How to perform a throw-in with accuracy
  • How to demonstrate excellent ball handling
  • How to be effective in a scrum
  • How to identify rule breaches within a game

Key skills developed In hockey:

  • How to lead a practice, demonstrating some leadership qualities
  • How to hold a position in a game situation fulfilling a role within the team
  • How to select and apply the most suitable pass in game situations
  • How to outwit an opponent in a game situation
  • How to time a tackle well within a game situation
  • How to shoot with accuracy and power
  • How to create, select and apply tactics within match play

Unit 2

Students' work in badminton continues in this unit with a focus on applying skills in a competitive situation. In netball, students develop their performance of advanced skills and their confidence when umpiring. This unit's focus on football teaches students to develop their confidence in executing core skills and in making decisions in game situations.

  • How to execute a variety of passes to gain an attacking advantage
  • How to dribble and run with the ball to relieve pressure and create opportunities
  • How to defend effectively as part of a team whilst keeping a good defensive shape
  • How to make the correct decisions when taking a shot at goal
  • How to combine skills to gain a tactical advantage over opponents
  • How to understand how different formations can be applied for tactical advantage
  • How to coach a team in a small-sided game

Unit 3

In athletics, students learn to apply tactics in middle-distance events. They learn a variety of batting, catching and pitching techniques in softball. The instruction in rounders enables students to develop the ability to bat in different directions, to advance their fielding technique and to explore the concept of problem solving in sport.

  • How to maintain a steady pace in middle-distance events while taking a good starting position
  • How to perform a coordinated sprinting technique
  • How to develop a good level of power in either a jump or a throw
  • How to offer peer-assessment leading to improvements in a partner's technique
  • How to discuss the importance of components of fitness relevant to different athletics events
  • How to identify events involving anaerobic respiration
  • How to explain the importance of having a positive outlook in PE and beyond

  • How to make a clean connection when hitting a softball
  • How to pitch with success
  • How to direct overarm throws to different bases successfully
  • How to take effective decisions in game situations
  • How to explain how to gain a tactical advantage in softball
  • How to explain all the rules of softball and implement them in a match situation
