Unit Content

Mis vacaciones

Students learn how to understand, express ideas and give descriptions about holidays and weather. They learn to express holiday preferences, to discuss what they did on holiday, and to talk about holiday accommodation 

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing vocabulary and structures related to holidays
  • Understanding the present tense
  • Understanding modal verbs for opinions
  • Understanding the preterite (past) tense, the imperfect tense, and how tenses are combined in Spanish
  • Understanding ‘usted’ (the formal 'you')

Key skills developed:

  • How to understand a variety of relevant spoken and written texts
  • How to apply vocabulary knowledge and more complex grammatical understanding to translation and writing tasks
  • How to use key structures and vocabulary to develop conversation

Assessment: Students are assessed formally in Term 3. The assessment ranges across all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and includes an extended piece of writing and engaging in a conversation. Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice questions in all four language skills.

Mis estudios y mi insti

Students learn how to understand and express descriptions of school life, focusing on details such as subjects, uniforms, the school day, teachers, facilities, rules, language exchanges, clubs and achievements.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing structures and vocabulary related to school life
  • Understanding adjectival agreement, comparatives and superlatives
  • Understanding how opinions are justified in Spanish
  • Understanding negatives
  • Understanding comparisions between then and now (imperfect and present tenses), modal verbs, the near future tense, and object pronouns

Key skills developed:

  • How to understand a variety of spoken and written texts within this context
  • How to apply vocabulary knowledge and more complex grammatical understanding to translation and writing tasks
  • How to use key structures to describe a photo and engage in a role play

Assessment: Students are assessed formally in Term 5. The assessment ranges across all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and includes an extended piece of writing and engaging in a conversation as well as a photocard and role-play task. Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice questions in all four language skills.

Students learn how to understand, express ideas and give information about social activities, social networks, making arrangements, recreational reading preferences, and relationships with friends and family.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing structures and vocabulary related to self, family and friends
  • Understanding the present tense
  • Understanding ‘para’ + infinitive (in order to)
  • Understanding the present continuous tense
  • Understanding ‘ser’ and ‘estar’
  • Understanding relationship-oriented verbs

Key skills developed:

  • How to deploy advanced connectives
  • How to understand a variety of relevant spoken and written texts
  • How to apply vocabulary knowledge and more complex grammatical understanding to translation and writing tasks
  • How to use key structures to describe a photo, engage in a role play and develop conversation skills

Assessment: Informal assessment takes place throughout the unit, through interactive tasks and practice questions in all four language skills.
