BTEC Health and Social Care

In this course, students study for the Pearson BTEC Tech Award (Level 1/2) in Health and Social Care. The following three units are studied sequentially across Years 10 and 11.

Unit Content

Unit 1

Human Lifespan Development

In this component, students study how people grow and develop over the course of their lives, from infancy to adulthood, and learn about the different factors that may affect their development. Students study how an individual’s development can be influenced by major life events such as marriage, parenthood or moving to a new house. They learn how people adapt to these changes as well as the types and sources of support that can help them.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing about human growth and development across the life stages
  • Understanding the factors that affect growth and development
  • Knowing about different types of life event
  • Understanding how individuals cope with change caused by life events

Key skills developed:

  • How to apply conceptual knowledge to case studies
  • How to write an account showing knowledge and understanding of each part of the component

Assesment: Non-exam internal assessment set by Pearson, marked in school and moderated by Pearson in Year 10.

Unit 2

Health and Social Care Services and Values

In this component, students learn about the health and social care services and how they meet the needs of service users. Students learn about the skills, attributes and values required when giving care.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing about health and social care services
  • Knowing about barriers to accessing services
  • Understanding skills and attributes in health and social care
  • Understanding values in health and social care
  • Knowing the obstacles individuals requiring care may face
  • Understanding the benefits to individuals of the skills, attributes and values in health and social care practice

Key skills developed:

  • How to apply conceptual knowledge
  • How to write an account showing knowledge and understanding of each part of the component
  • How to reach a justified judgement

Assesment: Non-exam internal assessment set by Pearson, marked in school and moderated by Pearson in Year 11.

Unit 3

Health and Wellbeing

This component builds on the knowledge and understanding acquired and developed in the first and second units. Students learn to apply their knowledge of human lifespan development and life events, sources and types of support, health and social care services, the skills, attributes and values that contribute to care and the barriers and personal obstacles to accessing services.

Key knowledge developed:

  • Knowing the factors that affect health and wellbeing
  • Understanding how health indicators can be interpreted
  • Understanding the person-centred approach to improving health and wellbeing
  • Understanding recommended actions to improve health and wellbeing
  • Knowing barriers and obstacles to following recommendations

Key skills developed:

  • How to apply knowledge and understanding of health and wellbeing
  • How to make connections between aspects of health and wellbeing
