Food & Nutrition 

Fundamentals

 

Year 7 Creative Arts begins with a highly practical unit in which students learn to use the essential equipment of food preparation such as knives, blenders, grill, hob and oven. They create healthy and varied food items including fruit skewers, smoothies, pancakes, cookies and cinnamon buns. This unit also teaches students to understand key components of Public Health England's Eatwell Guide.  

Key knowledge developed: 

  • Understanding key health and safety requirements in commercial and domestic kitchens 
  • Understanding the concept of food miles and how it influences decisions about what we eat 
  • Knowing key components of Public Health England's Eatwell Guide 

Key skills developed: 

  • How to demonstrate basic knife skills 
  • How to use a grill, hob and oven
  • How to identify and manage hazards in food production

Assessment: Students receive formative assessment on their progress throughout the unit. Summative assessment of the knowledge and skills learned is informed by students' engagement with their practical work and by their project outcomes.

Textiles

Tie-dye cacti 

Students explore colour blending and forms of 'resist' dyeing before completing their sewing machine induction. They study the work of artist Sian Keegan as a starting point for their own 3D tie-dye cacti. 

Key knowledge developed: 

  • Understanding the 'resist' dyeing methods 
  • Understanding product construction in textiles

Key skills developed: 

  • How to apply surface design to fabric 
  • How to operate a sewing machine safely and with precision 
  • How to research artists' work as inspiration for the development of ideas

Assessment: Students receive formative assessment on their progress throughout the unit. Summative assessment of the knowledge and skills learned is informed by students' engagement with their practical work and by their project outcomes.
